Well with October finally here, most people get a feeling of the year finally rolling to an end. But for me it always reminds me to be grateful for my mother. You see, October is breast cancer awareness month and has been declared so since 1985. It makes me proud to know my mother has braved through and has been surviving breast cancer for the last 5 years. What makes me just as happy as seeing my mother around, is the fact that social networks are being used for good causes such as spreading awareness about breast cancer. Social media optimization has provided non for profit organizations around the world a chance to get noticed and find followers that are willing to donate to their causes.

Facebook has helped the breast cancer awareness effort by providing applications that allow users to display a pink ribbon on their profile and encourage their friends to do the same by sending them invites. The pink ribbon symbolizes an individual affected by breast cancer. It could be a family member or friend they lost through breast cancer or one who has survived it. Facebook also directs users to breast cancer awareness websites that provide free mammograms to women in need every time someone clicks on their website. Last year in 2008, Twitter had a Social Media Optimization campaign called “Turn Twitter Pink” that focused on breast cancer awareness. It encouraged Twitter users to change their profile pictures or avatars to incorporate the color pink which symbolized their support for breast cancer awareness month.

Twitter and Facebook are also being used to update users on fundraisers in their area which can help raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. There are also bold slogans such as “Save The Ta Ta’s” and “Feel Your Boobies” being circulated on social networks to make breast cancer awareness popular among the younger generations. “Save The Ta Ta’s” actually has a website for apparel and products that will raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. Their social media optimization efforts have included uploading pictures on their social network profiles of their latest pink ribbon apparel and products for people to buy. Terminal cancer is a very touchy subject for some and for others something they know nothing about. In order for people to understand what breast cancer is and how it can affect their life, non for profit organizations have promoted the real life stories of breast cancer patients. They have distributing links on through their social network profiles that share the touching stories of breast cancer victims.

I agree and it’s nice to know we think alike. Social media optimization can definitely be used to promote worthy causes for non profit organizations. I hope it can be used increasingly to represent more causes such as breast cancer awareness and AIDS prevention.
